Life After Racing: 500 Retired Thoroughbreds Showcase Australia’s Off The Track Model

More than 500 retired thoroughbreds are gathering at Boneo Park for Racing Victoria’s second Off The Track Carnival from 11–13 September.

Why this deserves attention

Aftercare is one of the clearest tests of racing’s responsibility to the horse. The Carnival demonstrates how thoroughbreds can have productive athletic lives beyond racing, with dressage, combined training, show horse and show jumping.

Racing Victoria says all 500 competition places were filled within hours. The event has expanded to three days and offers more than $260,000 in prizemoney.

A wider aftercare system

Racing Victoria reports that its acknowledged post-racing provider network grew to more than 50 during 2025–26. It is also developing an Owners Transition Framework to help owners plan retirement and understand post-racing pathways.

Opportunity for Thoroughbred.Global

This suggests an international intelligence project: compare how Britain, Ireland, Australia, the United States, Japan and other jurisdictions track and support thoroughbreds after racing. Welfare, traceability, ownership responsibility and public confidence all meet here.
