Shamonda virus has been detected in horses in Switzerland. BEVA reports that viral genetic material was identified in brain samples from two affected horses following neurological disease.
Shamonda virus belongs to the Simbu serogroup of orthobunyaviruses, which mainly infect ruminants. Detection in horses is unusual and the significance of the findings is still being investigated.
Why it matters
This should be treated as an emerging surveillance development rather than evidence of a wider threat to British racing. It illustrates why international veterinary intelligence matters to a highly mobile racing and breeding industry.
