Equine Flu Restrictions Lifted as BHA Says Thoroughbred Risk Has Reduced

Equine Health Intelligence — 29 August 2026

The British Horseracing Authority has lifted the temporary restrictions placed on horses entering racecourse property from non-licensed training yards.

The decision follows a significant reduction in equine influenza across the British horse population and the absence of recent cases in Thoroughbred racehorses. Pony racing, Retraining of Racehorses parades and other equine activities at racecourses can resume.

Why it matters

This is an encouraging change in the immediate risk picture, but it does not remove the need for vaccination, surveillance and strong biosecurity. With the sales season approaching, movement between yards, studs and sales grounds makes continued vigilance particularly important.

Thoroughbred.Global view

The episode demonstrates the value of rapid disease surveillance and proportionate industry response. Thoroughbred.Global will continue to follow official equine-health and biosecurity developments.
