£2.8 Million and 76 Races: Investing in Britain’s Next Generation

British racing’s future depends not only on its established stars but on whether owners and breeders have sufficient reasons to develop and race young horses in Britain.

In 2026, 76 High Value Developmental Races are scheduled on the Flat, offering more than £2.8 million in prize money.

What is the programme designed to do?

The enhanced-value novice and maiden races are intended to support domestic breeding and encourage the purchase and racing of young talent in Britain.

The programme combines support from the BHA Development Fund with British Stallion Studs (EBF), Darley, Juddmonte and Tattersalls.

Prize money as investment

Prize money is often discussed simply in terms of what owners receive. Developmental races raise a broader question: can targeted prize money influence where horses are bought, trained and raced?

The Thoroughbred.Global question

Do these programmes retain investment in Britain? Do they encourage ownership? Do they strengthen British breeding? And are the outcomes being measured clearly enough?
