National Racehorse Week opens a door that British racing normally keeps closed.
Behind it is an extraordinary industry: racehorses receiving specialist care; stable staff working every day of the year; trainers preparing equine athletes; veterinarians and farriers; stud farms producing the next generation; and retraining specialists preparing former racehorses for new lives.
The question is: why doesn’t the wider public hear more about this throughout the year?
More than a week of open days
National Racehorse Week is important because it allows people to see racing from a different perspective. Instead of asking the public simply to watch racing, it invites people inside the industry.
The Horserace Betting Levy Board reported in 2026 that National Racehorse Week had created more than 65,000 free opportunities for direct public engagement since the initiative began.
The communication challenge
British racing faces significant questions surrounding funding, regulation, welfare, public perception and its relationship with government.
Against that background, demonstrating what racing actually does well becomes increasingly important.
National Racehorse Week shows that racing possesses powerful stories. The challenge is making sure those stories are communicated consistently rather than for only a few days each year.
From communication to opportunity
British racing possesses globally recognised horses, trainers, breeders, bloodstock businesses, racecourses and expertise. Organisations such as Godolphin demonstrate that the Thoroughbred industry is inherently international.
Could British racing become better at connecting those strengths? Could welfare, breeding, technology, investment, data, education and international collaboration become part of the same conversation?
We believe they can.
Our role
Thoroughbred.Global does not intend simply to repeat racing news available elsewhere.
Our objective is to identify important developments, connect different parts of the industry and ask what they mean for racing’s future.
National Racehorse Week provides a perfect example.
Celebrate the racehorse. Show people how it is cared for. Recognise the people behind it. And then ask: what can racing learn from this — and what should happen next?
That is a conversation Thoroughbred.Global intends to continue.
Thoroughbred.Global — A global perspective on the future of the Thoroughbred.
